Teaching Philosophy
December 5, 2011

My teaching philosophy is one that I believe is, and should be very flexible, is simple and creates the best opportunity for students to learn. Some of my philosophies are geared towards the students becoming better scientists; others are geared towards myself and include goals and desires. There are three categories to my teaching philosophy. The first is geared towards my students and their learning. The second is geared towards the students and them having fun and enjoying coming to school every day. Finally, the next part of my teaching philosophy is geared towards me and how I can motivate myself to become the best teacher possible. My philosophy is what will make my classroom the highest performing classroom possible and my ability to always adapt to changes will help each group of students learn to their highest potential.

The first part of my philosophy is geared towards the students and their learning. I would like to create a positive and comforting environment for learning where the students will not be intimidated or embarrassed to share their ideas. I believe that this is extremely important because students need to be able to help each other learn. If students do not feel comfortable sharing their ideas then the other students in the room are not getting that other perspective that is so important in learning. I also want to encourage my students to start thinking like a scientist and see the world through different eyes. This is very important even if the student does not have much of an interest in science nor has no desire to become a scientist. If you start thinking about the world like a scientist would, it is easier for them to know how the world works and this will help them out in their everyday live.

The next part of my teaching philosophy is to make sure the students are having a good time. This is very important to me because I had plenty of classes in the past that were boring and terrible to attend. I know that those classes were the hardest to learn in because if it is not a fun and interesting environment, it is hard to keep the students attention. If the student is truly enjoying themselves, they will be more likely to participate and much more likely to get involved and learn. I feel that high school years should be some of the best years of a young person’s life. It should not be a drag to go to school. Students should be looking forward to coming to biology class every day.

The third part of my teaching philosophy is about myself and my ability to be the best teacher I can be. I would like to motivate students, no matter what their level of learning may be. I want to push them to succeed and to achieve to the best of their abilities. This is very important to me because I would like to see all my students go to college and get a job that they love. I realize that I could be a life changer for some of these students and get them on track to the great life that they all deserve. Motivation is one of the key factors to students succeeding in high school. I want to encourage all of my students to come to class and make the most of it. I would like to be a role model by being the hardest working teacher. Being a hard worker has always been something that is very important to me. Growing up playing baseball, I would go home every day after practice and ask myself if I got outworked that day. If the answer was yes, then there was a problem. I believe that my work ethic and competitiveness will be two key attributes to help me succeed in my teaching career. Finally, I want to give everything I have to my students and make sure that I am available as a resource to them whenever they may need me. It can be for biology help or any other issue that a teenager may be going through. I know that high school is not all about school. There are many other issues that high school students go through that has nothing to do with their classes. I’ve been through high school and am able to look back at all my experience. I believe this knowledge can be useful to help my students have a great high school experience that they can be happy to look back on.

These are some of my main objectives as a teacher. I believe that it is important for these goals to be flexible because every year things are changing and it is important for your philosophies to evolve over time in order to create the best environment for learning to take place.

My teaching philosophy is one that I believe is, and should be very flexible, is simple and creates the best opportunity for students to learn. Some of my philosophies are geared towards the students becoming better scientists; others are geared towards myself and include goals and desires.
As a high school science teacher I will:
  • Create a positive and comforting environment for learning where students will not be intimidated or embarrassed to share their ideas.
  • Encourage students to start thinking like a scientist would and to see the world through a different perspective.
  • Motivate students, no matter what their level of learning may be, and push them to succeed and to achieve to the best of their abilities.
  • Make a fun and interesting environment where students are excited to come to class every day.
  • Be the hardest working teacher, and do everything in my power to make sure that every student is getting a proper education.
  • Give everything I have to the students and make sure I am available as a resource to them whenever they may need me; whether it be for biology help, or any other issues that a teenager goes through.
